HSE focuses on Dust Extraction
In a January edition of its email bulletin, the UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is running a work-related lung disease awareness campaign to highlight the importance of dust extraction systems to control dust levels for workers.
As mentioned in relation to World Cancer Day (4th February 2023), HSE's focus on lung diseases is very relevant as lung cancer is one of the most common diseases associated with dust exposure.
What are the Diseases that are Currently Affecting People?
Dust exposure is able to cause irreversible damage to healthy lungs. These health conditions & diseases caused by dust include:
- Work-related asthma - When exposed to substances known to be respiratory sensitisers, the lungs can become hypersensitive and take on common asthmatic symptoms such as wheezing, coughing and chest tightness. With continued exposure, these symptoms will progress to asthma attacks.
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) - Most known to affect smokers, dust can replicate the damage causing persistent breathlessness, chesty cough, wheezing and frequent chest infections.
- Lung cancer - A risk, especially when working with substances or a combination of substances known to be carcinogenic.
- Pneumoconiosis - A summarising term for diseases caused by inhalation, Pneumoconiosis is a delayed disease where the symptoms won’t appear for ten years and more after the exposure. Effecting an age range of the over 50s in relation to the time it takes to develop, the most recognised types of pneumoconiosis include coal workers pneumoconiosis & asbestosis.
- Silicosis - Another type of pneumoconiosis where the inhaled substance is respirable crystalline silica (RCS); silica comes from natural building materials such as stone, rocks, sands and clays.
Unfortunately, this isn’t a complete list of potential lung diseases caused by dust, but it is the most common. However, it does emphasise how important it is to prevent dust exposure in the first place.

What is the BOHS Breath Freely Campaign?
Initially launched in 2015, the breath freely campaign is focused on raising awareness of occupational lung disease. Working with employees and employers alike with the frequently updating health and safety regulations for dust control.
Aiming to reduce exposure and the statistics of those diagnosed with occupational lung diseases, the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) campaign has become a good source of advice. Offering information and guidance to the manufacturing and construction companies for the most suitable management and preventive measures.
The Importance of DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations)
A regulation to protect employees from risks of fire, explosions and substances corrosive to metals, having an extraction system to manage the risks is essential. These risks are the result of commonly used materials in industry like solvents, paints, varnishes and flammable gases; putting into place the measures to identify and reduce these risks is critical.
