Combustible Dusts - The Risks and How to Control Them

dust extractors

Combustible dust, or explosive dust is created from manufacturing processes that involve combustible raw materials such as light metals, wood, chemicals, and agricultural products such as grain. Aside from the health risks of working in a dust filled environment if combustible dust particles come in contact with spark, metal ember, or any other ignition source, they will cause an explosion.

Most importantly, the combustible dust spreads in the workplace affecting product quality and employee´s health. Having a dust-free environment is essential to the health and safety of the workforce. Not only does it affect the health of employees but this dust covers the equipment affecting production processes and quality of the products. This will in turn impact the frequency the machines receive maintenance. As the dust is combustible, it can explode inside the workplace, giving devastating outcomes. Composite Manufacturing & Dust

When manufacturing composite materials, many methods are used such as cutting, grinding, milling or polishing. These processes can release many particles such as dust and fibres that are extremely harmful and combustible. The amount of combustible dust that is released in composite machining is very high compared to other sectors.

Dust Regulations in UK and EU- What is ATEX?

ATEX is the name commonly given to the two European Directives that control explosive atmospheres:

  1. Directive 99/92/EX (also known as ATEX 137 or the ATEX Workplace Directive) sets minimum requirements for improving the health and safety protection of workers potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres. In the UK this EU Directive was put in place via the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR)- these requirements apply to most workplaces where a potentially explosive atmosphere may occur.
  2. Directive 2014/34/EU (also known as ATEX 114 or The ATEX Equipment Directive) deals concerns equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

If you have potentially explosive dusts in your manufacturing environment it is essential you familiarize yourself with these directives and DSEAR in the UK.

Requirements of DSEAR

  • Manufacturers must classify areas where explosive atmospheres may occur into zones
  • Selection of equipment and protective systems must match the risks associated with each zone
  • Workers in zoned areas must wear appropriate clothing
  • Manufacturers must ensure that explosive safety measures are verified as being safe before the workforce comes into operation.
  • Capturing the dust right at the source to prevent it from spreading is the most crucial part of being safe; this is done by using a dust extractor to facilitate the important housekeeping to avoid it from accumulating on the floor and machinery. Facilities that are well maintained experience fewer fires, accidents, and explosions. To avoid any accidents good housekeeping is extremely important.
  • A hazardous dust control program that includes testing, housekeeping and dust inspection is critical.
  • Equipping your facility with suitable dust extractor systems and filters, vacuum cleaners for dust collection, will be an essential part of managing dust
  • Training employees on the hazards of combustible dust are factors that need to take place in the workplace.
  • Ensuring wiring methods and appropriate electrical equipment, controlling the use of open flames (such as prohibiting lighters of cigarettes), and keeping heated systems and surfaces away from combustible dust are good practices to prevent accidents.
