Uses for a Laboratory Oven
An essential machine in all laboratories, from scientific research to forensic investigation, laboratory ovens are used for a wide range of general and specialised applications across many sectors.
Lab ovens can be a smaller model of the industrial oven, with the same quality features, or include specialist features such as glassware racking.
The most popular lab ovens include forced air ovens (mechanical convection ovens), vacuum ovens, gravity convection ovens and high-temperature ovens, each with specialised purposes, making them the go-to oven for many processes.
Annealing
To prepare a material such as glass or metals for its final shape/form, annealing is a process of heating the materials to a temperature associated with high-temperature laboratory ovens (up to 650°C). This annealing process results in the components becoming flexible & ductile, allowing the form of the components to be physically altered to be made into medical and science instruments such as syringes and catheters.
Sterilising
Continuing with the medical and science industries, sterilising is one of the most effective cleaning/decontamination methods for lab equipment & glassware. Requiring a relatively simple laboratory oven to heat the equipment to 160°C (minimum). The equipment is then further cooled in a controlled manner to prevent cracking from potential heat stress.
Drying
As one of the core purposes of a laboratory oven is to remove moisture, dehumidifying components & substances can vary from drying components as part of a post cleaning stage to drying a substance to change its state. Although not all drying ovens are the same, depending on the process, it can alter which features are required. A forced air/hot air oven is capable of removing moisture when set to a low temperature cycle. While a gravity convection oven with its more natural and reduced airflow inside the chamber would be the preference for delicate subjects that a forced airflow could damage.
Polymer Curing
A specialised process that makes polymers in the nanotech and semiconductor industries, these thin layers of chemical compounds are cured in a laboratory oven to create a selection of epoxies, glues, plastics and rubbers. Able to produce compounds and substances known for their strong adhesive properties, they have become one of the preferred substances for securing components to circuitry within the military, space and medical industries.
Additional Uses for a Laboratory Oven
With more uses for a laboratory oven than annealing, sterilising, drying and polymer curing, the full potential of a lab oven has endless possibilities for processing components and substances. Frequently used for more experimental purposes or small batches, some additional uses for a lab oven worth mentioning include:
- Research and Development Testing/Sampling - For the laboratories & R&D departments researching methods to innovate and improve their services for the future, lab ovens are the perfect size for the smaller batches of these experimental facilities. Precision laboratory ovens in these environments frequently feature a data recorder to keep a log of the specifications of each process.
- Paint Curing – A common process in our larger industrial ovens, laboratory ovens are still used for curing wet paint mixes and powder coating, just in small batches. The typically smaller internal chamber lends itself perfectly to testing paint/powder formulas.
- Liquid/Chemical Warming –Not all processes require a large barrel of chemical substances, as seen commonly in barrel warming ovens. Warming smaller tins and tubs to help retain the viscosity of a substance or reduce the viscosity for an easier pour, laboratory ovens are the answer.
Laboratory Oven – An Essential That Shouldn’t be Overlooked
A common machine in research facilities within the manufacturing industry, laboratory ovens are the flexible solution to many processes.
