What Can Manual & Automated Powder Coating Lines Offer You?

Powder Coating Lines

A popular process made up of three fundamental steps, powder coating is a practical method for applying coatings to gain additional properties and aesthetic appeal for a vast array of components. Most prominent in the manufacturing of appliances, automotive parts & architectural materials, the scale of the process lines can greatly vary, reflecting the variety of components powder coating is used for.

Types of Powder Coating Production Lines

Based on various factors such as production volume, part size & shape, automation level, and specific coating requirements, the most popular types of production lines used in the industry are batch systems and automated coating lines.

Each production line contains the machinery for the three key stages of powder coating (pre-treatment, application and curing); it's how the components are handled that differs.

Stand-Alone Machinery – Powder Coating Batch System

A batch powder coating line is a manual system where parts are coated in batches, typically consisting of a cleaning station, spray booth or manual coating room, curing oven and material handling equipment.

Typically made up of stand-alone machines, this system offers the operator a flexible set-up to suit their factory layout. As long as there is room for operators to handle components using racks, hangers or carts to transport parts between stages, you can assemble a batch system over time from individual machines.

Each machine can be used for other processes within the factory or workshop, so it can often be found in smaller facilities that do not deal in high volumes of powder coating or less specialised businesses.

One-Stop Production Line - Automated Powder Coating Line

In a continuous conveyorised powder coating line, parts are loaded onto a conveyor system and move continuously through the stages of the powder coating process. Manoeuvring the components using durable and heat-resistant conveyors, these lines can be fully automated or semi-automated to suit production demands.

Typically custom-made to a manufacturer's requirements, the design considers the size of the components and the specific coating process used. These systems include design features such as thin machine entrances & exits for slimmer components to conveyor rail connections suitable to place racks of larger batches.

What’s the Middle Ground? – Manual Cross-Conveyor Systems

As with all process lines, they can be designed and assembled to your needs, creating endless possibilities for your individual set-up. An in-between option to batch systems and automated lines, manual cross-conveyor systems is a powder coating line that has the handling equipment built in.

A rack or overhead rail connects all the machinery in this system for efficiently transporting the components between treatment stages. If the material handling solution isn’t linear, the operator isn’t restricted by the order of the line and can move parts to repeat stages for multiple layers of powder coating.

Which Powder Coating Set Up is for You?

Each type of production line comes with its own benefits, which can be matched to the desired process outcome. The design needs to factor in production volume, part size and shape, automation level, and specific coating requirements.

Having looked into three types of powder coating lines in this article, you can see they are broadly matched to the scale of production:

  • Batch Systems- great for small to medium production volumes, batch systems are the most cost-effective with potentially the smallest footprints suitable for most premises.
  • Automated Powder Coating Lines– Automated lines are the most efficient treatment line. Tending to have a higher price tag, the increased investment is worth it for the higher volume production, producing consistent & high-quality finishes to all the processed components.
  • Manual Cross-Conveyor Systems– suitable for medium production volumes, manual conveyor systems make handling the components easy. Typically, it is a popular option for manufacturers looking to increase their production from a batch system while still having a compact footprint and flexible application.
