Deburring: Smooth Out Your Metal for Perfect Functionality
Deburring is the removal of irregularities, known as burrs, from metal products. The burrs are tiny pieces of metal that are stuck to the surface of the sheet metal, mostly around the cut edges. Burrs are caused by certain machining activities such as laser, punched, plasma cutting, or stamping. If burrs are not removed, they affect the finished part of the metal; deburring is the process that removes these imperfections to provide a smooth and reliable metal part.
Types of Burr
Rollover Burr: The most common type of burr. They look like tiny bits of curled metal projecting up from the workpiece.
Poisson Burr: Occur when too much metal collects at the end of the piece.
Breakout Burr/Tear Burr: Has a specific characteristic of an upswelling shape that makes them look like they are breaking out of the workpiece.

Different Types of Deburring
- Manual deburring: The most common and economical method; technicians scrape or buff the burrs out of the metal piece by hand using simple tools. It can be an easy process but it is very time consuming, and it reduces productivity.
- Mechanical Deburring: A deburring machine is used to grind the burr off. It is a more expensive method but more productive.
- Thermal deburring: This method uses combustive gases to generate thermal energy; the burr is removed by burning the material in a controlled combustion chamber. This process is great for getting out difficult to reach burrs.
- Electrochemical deburring: In this method, a solution or salt is used to conduct energy through the burrs. The electrochemical energy removes the burrs while leaving the rest of the metal intact. This method is used with extreme challenging metals and difficult to reach areas.
- Grinding and Rolling Method: This method is similar to manual deburring but much faster and therefore cost-efficient.
- Vibratory Finishing and Tumbling: This method uses a vibrating or centrifugal container. The barrel contains a mixture of abrasives and liquids that move and rub against the metal parts due to the vibratory movement. This method not only removes the burrs but it leaves a great surface finish to the metal parts. Barrel tumbling can be wet or dry. In wet tumbling, water is loaded, acting as a lubricant and helps wash out residues to improve deburring efficiency. In Dry tumbling, only sand and dried organic materials are used. Vibratory deburring machines are similar to barrel tumbling where parts are loaded into a chamber along with compounds. The main difference is the movement of the chamber; tumblers rotate to generate agitations inside the chamber.
