The Different Types of Industrial Furnaces

furnace

To keep up with demands and different applications, different types of furnaces had to be developed to suit for a wide range of applications. There are four main types of furnaces: natural gas, oil, electric and propane. Electric furnaces can heat the air by exposing heated elements, while other types of furnaces require a heat exchanger or chamber that warms the surrounding air. One of the functions of industrial furnaces is to heat treat metals for annealing, tempering, carburizing and pre-treat materials for forging.

Furnaces and their Applications

Ashing Furnaces

Used to determine the amount of ash that forms after a sample is burned. The is used to determine any contaminants in the sample, it is used as a preconcentration method to detect any trace substance before chemical analysis. Some examples of materials that are used in ashing furnaces include petroleum products, coals, and lubricating oils.

Calcination Furnaces

Heat treatment processes in which samples such as minerals or ceramic powders are heated below the melting point to induce phase transitions, thermal decomposition or to change the surface.

Tempering Furnaces

Tempering is the process of heating steel to a specific temperature and then cooling it in still air. The objective of tempering furnaces is to remove hardness; they are often used after iron-based alloys have been subjected to hardening or quenching to remove the metal stress, brittleness, and excess hardness these processes can cause.

Annealing Furnaces

Annealing furnaces heat up material and maintain its temperature before cooling at a suitable rate. Different temperatures and rates are used depending on the type of material and its requirements. The process of annealing is used to soften a sample for improved cold working, its machinability, and to enhance its electrical and mechanical properties.

Sintering Furnaces

Sintering processes form and compact a solid mass material using pressure or heat without melting the sample to the point of liquefaction. This process is used to reduce the porosity of a material and to enhance a specific property including strength, translucency, thermal conductivity, or electrical conductivity.

Tensile Testing Furnaces

These types of furnaces work by subjecting the sample to controlled tension until complete failure- this is a popular test method for quality control. They are used to measure the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, strain-hardening, and a range of other properties of materials.

Rotary Tube Furnaces

These furnaces are circular and rotate during heat treatment. Rotary tube furnaces are used for continuous materials processing as they can apply heat in multiple thermal control zones.

At Rileys, we have a broad range of different types of industrial furnaces and ovens. Riley Surface World is the world's leading live and online marketplace for new and used, industrial surface treatment and metal finishing plant and machinery.
