Description

A specialist industrial oven designed for torrefaction, this Caltherm 250°C torrefaction oven also suitable for general curing, drying, and heat treatment applications. It features a stainless steel chamber, Eurotherm programmable controls, humidity regulation, water sprinkler system and trolley loading for controlled, efficient processing.

This special build Caltherm oven was designed and built for the Torrefaction of biomass products but can be used as a standard oven for heating and curing and drying of any product just as a standard 250°C oven.

Torrefaction - What is it?

Torrefaction of biomass is a mild thermochemical pre-treatment that heats biomass (such as wood chips or agricultural residue) in an oxygen-depleted environment to temperatures between 200°C and 300°C. When biomass is heated at such temperatures, the moisture evaporates and various low-calorific components (volatiles) contained in the biomass are driven out. During this process mainly the hemi-cellulose in the biomass decomposes. This transforms the biomass from a fibrous low quality fuel into a product with excellent fuel characteristics.

Whilst similar to Pyrolysis, torrefaction is conducted at lower temperatures and has different objectives. Pyrolysis aims to maximise liquid product yields, while torrefaction focuses on maximising solid biochar yield with improved fuel properties.
