Effluent Treatment Plant

Basis of Design

The plant is designed to treat rinse waters which flow by gravity from the Copper, Nickel and Chrome Plating Plant based on a total flow rate of 1000 litres per hour. Waste process solutions for cleaning and acid dips which are only dumped periodically are transferred from the process tanks into the acid/alkaline sump and diverted to the acid or alkaline holding tanks and bled into the effluent plant sumps during normal working hours.
The effluent discharge limits have been designed at:

  • pH 6 to 10
  • Chromium 5 parts per million
  • Individual toxic metals 5 parts per million
  • Total toxic metals 10 parts per million
  • Cyanide 1 part per million.
  • Total nominal effluent plant footprint (including floor sumps) 5,000mm x 6,150mm

Plant Description

Three civil constructed sumps with polypropylene liners with six chemical pumps for pumping to treatment module.
One four compartment treatment module comprising:

  • Chrome treatment compartment constructed from polypropylene with pH and redox meters, mixer, reagent holding tanks, dosing pumps and level controls.
  • Cyanide treatment compartment constructed from polypropylene with pH and redox meters, mixer, reagent holding tanks, dosing pumps and level controls.
  • Neutralisation treatment compartment constructed from polypropylene with pH meter, mixer, reagent holding tanks, dosing pumps and level controls.
  • Pumping compartment constructed from polypropylene with level controls.
  • The above treatment module will be suppled as one unit with nominal overall dimensions 3200mm long x 1080mm wide x 930mm high.
  • Two stainless steel pumps (one duty, one standby) for transfer of solution from pumping tank to settlement tank.
  • Six off cylindrical polyethylene reagent holding tanks complete with dosing pumps.
  • One alkaline dump tank of nominal dimensions 585mm wide x 1200mm long x 1220mm deep manufactured from mild steel lined internally with polypropylene and painted externally.
  • One acid dump tank of nominal dimensions 605mm wide x 1200mm long x 1220mm deep manufactured from polypropylene.
  • One 5000 litre capacity rectangular mild steel settlement tank with hopper bottom, weir overflow, lamella packing and inlet outlet connections. Nominal dimensions 1570mm wide x 1660mm long x 3370mm high. Tank fitted with access ladder and inspection platform.
  • One 5000 litre capacity cylindrical mild steel sludge tank with hopper bottom, weir overflow and inlet outlet connections. Nominal dimensions 2000mm diameter x 3225mm high.
  • One central control panel with instruments and electrical controls.


Effluent Treatment Sequence

Rinse water effluent flows by gravity into the effluent plant sumps in three separate drainage pipes.

The first pipe carries chrome effluent rinses following chrome plating and enters the chrome sump and is pumped to the chrome treatment compartment (chrome reduction tank). Here the presence of hexavalent chrome is detected, and sodium metabisulphite reagent released as required by the redox meter/dosing pump system. Also, in this compartment acid is released via the pH meter/dosing pump system so that the pH is always below 3.5. In this acid environment and utilising the sodium metabisulphite reagent the chrome is reduced to the trivalent state. The effluent then overflows into the neutralisation compartment.

The second pipe carries cyanide effluent rinses following copper plating and alkaline rinses following cleaning and enters the cyanide sump and is pumped to the cyanide treatment compartment. Here the presence of cyanide is detected, and sodium hypochlorite reagent is added via the redox meter/dosing pump system. Also, in this compartment sodium hydroxide is added via the pH meter/dosing pump system so that the pH is always at 11. In this alkali environment the cyanide is converted to ammonium carbonate. This then flows to the neutralisation compartment.

The third pipe carries all other effluent rinses and enters the neutralisation sump and is pumped to the neutralisation compartment. In the neutralisation compartment the effluent is corrected to about pH 8.5 via the pH meter/caustic dosing pump system. After 15/20 minutes retention the effluent overflows into the pumping compartment where it is pumped to the settlement tank. Solids including metal hydroxides precipitate and leave clear supernatant effluent to overflow to foul sewer. Polyelectrolyte is added to assist in sludge formation. Periodically sludge is removed from the bottom of the settlement tank into the adjacent sludge holding tank. Please note the existing sludge dewatering equipment (filter press) is not included in the sale as it is being retained by Apeks Marine for use on their new plant.

 Effluent Treatment Service Records

Apeks Marine have maintained for many years a servicing and instrumentation calibration contract with a specialist effluent treatment company. This involves four site visits per annum to ensure the plant is performing correctly. These service records are available for inspection if required.
