This TORVAC furnace is a compact top loading unit, with a working space of 300mm DIA x 450mm Height (12” X 18”). It has a fully stainless steel, water cooled chamber and lid. Fitted with an Edwards oil diffusion pump and two stage Edwards rotary-vane mechanical pump.

Formerly used for titanium wire annealing, it is a high vacuum model capable of c. 10-6 m bar and 1300°C operating temperature. 60kg max load.

The vacuum furnace comprises the following major components: -

  • Double skinned water-cooled vacuum vessel
  • Double skinned water-cooled lid
  • 850 mbar inert gas recirculating fast cooling system
  • Water cooling manifold for water flow control
  • Fully automatic integrated control cabinet with a SYSMAC C20 PLC.
  • Eurotherm controllers
  • Chessel Chart Recorder – 6 inch.
  • A two stage pump set comprising Edwards “rotary” pump and a final vapour diffusion pump
  • Heating via a power transformer with phase angle firing solid state thyristor
  • Flanged and hinged furnace door which opens sufficiently to allow complete and unobstructed access to the hot zone
  • Fully automatic SYSMACS20 PLC control ensuring reproducible cycles and product quality.
  • Removable hot zone top/door bung which opens during the quenching operation.

General Operation

Loading the Furnace

Loading is carried out from above, either manually or by jib crane, not included.

Selecting and starting the cycle

Cycle is automatic, with the programme entered to the Eurotherm programmer and sequencing via the PLC.


  • Control panel. This is multi voltage. 440 V 3 phase system, with low voltage transformer for the heating.
  • Furnace connected power is 30kVA

A vacuum furnace will heat materials, typically metals, to very high temperatures and carry out processes such as brazing, sintering and heat treatment with high consistency and low contamination.

The processing of components through a vacuum furnace can offer many advantages over conventional thermal Vacuum Furnace
treatment routes:

  • No surface oxidation or discolouration
  • Minimal distortion
  • No post cleaning operations
  • Near finished, machined shape prior to treatment
  • Flux free brazing
  • Combined vacuum/atmosphere processing
  • Repeatable quality
  • Environmentally acceptable furnaces
  • Clean, safe, quiet and efficient

Heating metals to high temperatures normally causes rapid oxidation, which is undesirable. A vacuum furnace removes the oxygen and prevents this from happening.

An inert gas, such as Argon, is typically used to quickly cool the treated metal back to non-metallurgical levels (below 205 °C) after the desired process in the furnace. This inert gas can be pressurised to two times atmosphere or more, then circulated through the hot zone area to pick up heat before passing through a heat exchanger to remove heat. This process continues until the desired temperature is reached.
