Micronics MODEL 250 1 - EBR,Sidebar Filter Press

A filter press is a piece of equipment used in liquid/solid separation. Specifically, the filter press separates the liquids and solids using pressure filtration, wherein a slurry is pumped into the filter press and is dewatered under pressure.

Filter presses are used for liquid/solid separation in an extensive range of industries and applications from food and beverage processing to chemical manufacturing, mining, power generation, aggregates, asphalt and cement production, steel mills, and municipal plants.

A filter press is an economic and efficient liquid solids separation device.   At one end of the machine is the feed‐head containing piping for the slurry delivery. At the other end is the crosshead containing a hand operated clamping mechanism. 

A moving plate (the tail plate) clamps the filter plate pack. The plate pack comprises a number of filter plates forming chambers for solids collection. A filter media (which may be a woven cloth, felted cloth, coated media or paper) is supported by the plates of the plate pack. Slurry is pumped into the chamber and against the filter media.

Liquid (the filtrate) passes through the filter cloth and exits through the filtrate ports of the filter plate. The solids (filter cake) collect on the surface of the filter cloth within the chambers until the chamber is full. The cake may be washed or blown dry if necessary. Filter cakes are then discharged and the filtration cycle is complete.

How Does a Filter Press Work?

Slurry is pumped into the filter press and the solids are distributed evenly during the fill cycle. Solids build up on the filter cloth, forming the filter cake; the filtrate exits the filter plates through the port into the manifold.

Filter presses are a pressure filtration method and as such, as the filter press feed pump builds pressure, solids build within the chambers until they are completely chock-full of solids, forming the cake. Once the chambers are full, the cycle is complete and the filter cakes are ready to be released.
