Walther Trowal Drag Finishing Machine

This high quality machine formed part of the demonstration and testing facility at Walther Trowal UK’s Surface Technology Centre. As such this machine is in great condition. The drag finishing systems developed by Trowal represents a special technology for surface finishing of high value, delicate components, parts with many contours and complex geometry and extremely hard materials which are difficult to machine.

The applications for the Trowal drag finishing technology range from aggressive grinding to surface smoothing and high gloss polishing of decorative parts.

Impingement-free mass finishing

Drag finishing and plunge grinding are highly specialised mass finishing methods. Ideally suited for processing delicate, high value, components, these processes provide precise, targeted surface finishes.

The process parts are attached to spindles and dragged through a work bowl filled with grinding or polishing media to prevent part impingement or part-on-part contact.


Drag finishing and plunge finishing greatly expand the range of mass finishing applications. By ensuring precise, repeatable finishing results, this technology offers significant technical advantages over both manual and robotic grinding and polishing, as well as mechanical brush and grinding systems.

Drag Finishing systems are ideal for finishing high value and sensitive parts which cannot touch each other during the finishing process.

A rotary carousel with work spindles and fixed parts "drags" the workpieces through the media mass. The rotation of both the carousel and the spindles guarantee an even treatment of the parts. Drag finishing offers a metal removal rate which is often up to 40 times higher than vibratory finishing.

 Spinner drive

The rotating spinner head features 4 individual spindles that can be used with a number special fixtures. Each rotates independently and can be adjusted within a given speed range.

Work bowls 

  • The 2 work bowl contains the grinding or polishing media, and can accommodate wet or dry processing. 
  • Work bowl can be quickly changed and is easily transported with a manual pallet truck or forklift

  • Bottom drains with large screen area and optional drain flush system
