Description

Effluent outfall tank

In the latter part of the 19th century a number of Acts of Parliament have been implemented to control trade effluent.

The provisions related to trade effluent discharge to the public sewer network are now contained in the Water Industry Act 1991.

The Act defines trade effluent as:

(a) any liquid, either with or without particles of matter in suspension in the liquid, which is wholly or partly produced in the course of a trade or industry carried on at a trade premises/and

(b) in relation to any trade premises, means any such liquid which is so produced in the course of any trade or industry carried on at those premises.

Trade effluent is waste water derived from a trade or industrial process which is not domestic sewage

Consented discharges in the which range from launderettes to car washes to large chemical manufacturing sites.

As such treated waste water requires to be nuetralised of its chemistry, of the correct pH value and be free from solids.

The effluent outfall tank provides a means of treating, testing and monitoring the out-falling water and acting as a final entrapment for any solids that may have been carried over.

The tank is formed by a series of baffles which gives the solution an extended path relative to its length allowing the solids to fall out of suspension and be contained in the slower moving section at the base of the tank.

Various monitoring devices to register the pH, volume or conductivity can be added at the final stages for recording and validation purposes.

With the monitoring in place reactive chemicals can then be added to the early stage and stirred to correct the water quality like pH or conductivity.
