Special NDT Fluorescent Flaw Detection System

.This special purpose built machine is an automated F.F.D. (fluorescent flaw detection) system for the non-destructive testing of castings, press stampings fabricated and machined parts.

At the heart of the process is a fully automated multi-programmable Kerry Autotrans Mk4 Major, an intelligent robotic handling system that controls all the functions of the installation

The general principle of this flaw detection system is that the parts to be tested are immersed in a fluorescent dye penetrant which permeates any and all of the sub surface cracks or imperfections. The parts are then washed free of the surface dye and rinsed in water to remove any residual residue before drying the surface of the parts in a low temperature oven. The parts now dry are added to a storm cabinet that engulfs the parts in a fine developer power which draws the dye to the surface of the defective material whereby when inspected under a black light will fluoresce a bright yellow, detailing the sub surface flaws.

The automated Mk4 fluorescent flaw detection system has all of the inner and outer panels constructed fully from chemically inert stainless steel. Mounted over the systems full length is a guarding system to protect the operator from the automatic robotic movements.

PROCESS OPERATIONS:

Station 1
Manual insertion of carriers into the load - unload robot station

Station 2
Pneumatic raise and lower platform to offer an agitated wash in the immersed fluorescent die, with or without electro mechanical contra rotation of the basket or fixture to allow ingress into blind and cross drilled holes and cavities, then auto rotate to drain the dye from all the surfaces above the tank.

Station 3
Heated immersion wash off with pumped under solution agitation, electro mechanical contra rotation of the basket or fixture to provide a full flushing action to clear any galleries or holes before exiting through a final clean water rinse spray.
This station is connected to both an external heated solution break storage tank and cold water rinse tank that allows the clean sprayed cold water rinse to weir to waste through the immersion solution and break tank maintaining the systems wash off solution in an optimum condition and providing a clean final rinse.

Station 4
Vacuum drying oven with Infra-red ( IR ) heaters, automatic shuttle sealed lid with pneumatic clamping to provide fast and efficient drying of all types of components even those with blind holes, recesses and oil galleries.

Station 5
Magnaflux stainless steel air agitated developer powder storm cabinet with automatic powder dust extractor and return to tank unit.

Station 6
Black out inspection cabinet with a portable Black Light System which produces longwave ultraviolet light at 365 nanometers, providing optimum fluorescence for the testing materials to show any flaws that are detected.

Each process tanks is 700 x 825 x 600mm deep
The maximum carrier or basket dimensions are 430 x 640 x 430mm

• Touch sensitive programming keyboard with LCD 16-line programming function and prompt display.
• Program storage and security provided by ‘smartcard’.
• Password protection to prevent unauthorised program access.
• Up to 64 programmable I/O functions and 32 flags as standard. Flags can be used for further position
recognition and process timings.
• Full edit facilities including position, dwell time and function controls.
• Infinitely variable programmable motor speed control.
• Positional accuracy to +/-1mm provided by servo motors with built-in positional encoder.
• Over-travel protection and automatic datum reference upon machine initialisation.
• RS 232 interface available to allow off-line programming and monitoring.

The system was originally using a water washable Britemore 4455 fluorescent flaw detection solution but is suitable for a number of proprietary types of fluorescent die chemicals

OPTIONAL USEAGE

As the system is fully user programmable the tankage would lend itself to operate solely as a 4 stage wash, immersion rinse, spray rinse and vacuum dry
optional extra's include:-
- Stage 1 heating and or ultrasonic cleaning
- Stage 2 heating and or ultrasonic rinsing
- A user definable additional station such as a De Ionised final rinse can be added in place of the storm cabinet and remain within the operating range of the robotic handler.
